SAFETY & BEHAVIOR

Please note that all attendees (and organizers!) of CASTLETOWN are expected to follow the Safety & Behavioral Guidelines below:

  1. VIBE: Everyone is responsible for creating a welcoming and supportive environment at CASTLETOWN. Games culture can often be overly competitive, hostile, and disparaging of others. Help us create a different vibe here!
  2. QUESTIONS: Asking questions is welcomed. Everyone will be unfamiliar with the games, and we will figure them out together. Please ask for any clarifications or accommodations that you need, and others are expected to support you.
  3. RESPECT: We require all attendees to treat each other with respect, kindness, and compassion. Humans are more important than games! If something makes you uncomfortable or upset, please tell one of the organizers, and we will do our best to provide support and develop an appropriate response.
  4. HEALTH: To make the event accessible to guests with health concerns and disabilities, face masks will be required while indoors at CASTLETOWN. Masks will be provided for attendees who do not bring their own. If the weather is nice, some games may be able to take place outside, preferrably in the shade.
  5. SPEECH: We will not tolerate personal insults, sexual harassment & unwelcome advances, homophobia & transphobia, offensive ethnic & religious comments, and other inappropriate language & behavior that contributes to a hostile or unwelcoming environment.
  6. IDENTITY: Sometimes players may take on roles that don’t match their perceived gender, age, race, culture, or other parts of their identity. This is a normal part of play, especially when done respectfully. However, it’s also okay to ask a clarifying question or point out when someone’s portrayal might be offensive, so that everyone feels comfortable.
  7. PAUSE: If any player expresses a need to pause/stop or leave a group or game session — at any time, for any reason — they are welcome to do so. Players asking to pause/stop or leave a game may or may not feel comfortable explaining why, and that’s okay too. We trust attendees to invoke this rule in a responsible way.
  8. CONTENT: Some sessions, particularly the more intense RPGs, may include sensitive or “adult” content that happens within the fiction of the game (violence, romance, oppression, etc.). A list of useful “safety/comfort” guidelines will be provided, for each player group to use as needed. If you are unsure, ask or check-in with your fellow players before you say, describe, or do something that might be upsetting. It’s also always okay to object to something that happens in a game and request for it to be handled differently. It’s just a game!
  9. MINORS: Some games may be targeted toward children & teenagers. Please take special care when playing with or near younger guests, or find a more private or distant location if you will likely need to say, describe, or do things that may not be appropriate for minors. All underage attendees must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  10. SPACE: We are borrowing space from CMU’s Studio for Creative Inquiry, but it is not ours. We are all guests. Please do your best to keep the space clean and not damage any of the equipment or furniture in the space. If the organizers or your fellow attendees ask you to help clean up, please pitch in.
  11. CONSEQUENCES: As needed, the organizers can move people in and out of games, issue warnings, and/or ask people to leave. We are always willing to explain these requests & decisions, but we expect them to be respected & followed.
  12. EMERGENCIES: If there are emergencies or other situations that we feel unable to manage safely, the organizers may contact emergency personnel for assistance, including police. However, we will not do this lightly and will try to give fair warning if police may be arriving. Note that CMU Police may also be freely patrolling the campus, without being summoned.
